Since this requirement is still relatively new and unfamiliar, we have created this blog to explain everything you should know.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a <\/strong><strong>Washington Plumbing Bond<\/strong><strong>?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one example of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.performancesuretybonds.com\/surety-bond\/contractors-license-bond\/\">contractor licensing bond<\/a>: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.performancesuretybonds.com\/ref\/contact-us\/\">type of surety bond<\/a> that many contractors need to get before they can obtain a mandatory professional license from the state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All surety bonds work in essentially the same way. There are three parties involved:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Principal <\/strong>\u2013 The principal is the plumber who must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.performancesuretybonds.com\/surety-bond\/obtaining-a-surety-bond\/\">obtain the surety bond<\/a>. As the principal, the plumber must accept financial liability for all valid claims.<\/li><li><strong>Obligee <\/strong>\u2013 The obligee is the Washington State Department of Labor &amp; Industries, the agency that licenses plumbers. As the obligee, this agency may file claims for damages if the principal violates state laws applicable for plumbing contractors.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Surety <\/strong>\u2013 The surety is the agency that issues and backs a plumbing bond in Washington. The surety guarantees to pay the obligee for valid claims if the principal does not pay. However, the principal must pay that debt back later, with interest and fees included, since they are the party with liability for claims. The surety only serves as an intermediary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Are <\/strong><strong>Washington Plumbing Bonds<\/strong><strong> Necessary?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most states require contractors to obtain surety bonds before granting them a license because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.performancesuretybonds.com\/blog\/what-is-a-contractor-bond\/\">contractor bonds<\/a> help to regulate their behavior. There are two different license types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Residential Speciality License<\/strong> \u2013 This license<strong> <\/strong>authorizes a plumber to work on residential properties, small buildings, irrigation systems, and backflow prevention assemblies. It requires 6,000 hours of experience.<\/li><li><strong>Journeyman License <\/strong>\u2013 This license authorizes a plumber to work on any kind of property or plumbing project. It requires 8,000 hours of experience with a minimum 4,000 in commercial work.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both these license types require a surety bond worth $6,000, meaning the surety that backs the bond will pay up to (but not exceeding) $6,000 to settle claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Much Does a <\/strong><strong>Plumbing Bond in WA<\/strong><strong> Cost?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.performancesuretybonds.com\/surety-bond\/cost-of-a-surety-bond\/\">cost of the bond<\/a> will be a small percentage of the $6,000 value. Then, you will need to apply for a bond, which typically involves these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Complete a standard surety bond application.
